Historic Route Tour - 13 Days and 12 Nights - (Surface)
Highlights of the Tour: Religion and culture is quite interwoven in the present Ethiopia. This can be witnessed by the values and norms of the people’s life. Christianity was first introduced in Ethiopia by the Ethiopian eunuch who meets Philip on the road to Gaza as in the book of Acts 8:27.
But Christianity was fist accepted as state religion in the 4th century by King Ezana and the first church was erected in the present city of Axum around 342 and in Europe only Armenia was a Christian state at this period.Then as the power of kingdom moves from Axum to the present day Lalibela, the kings had excavated 12 churches from a rock which has been a place of worship for more than 800 years old and are still active for Christian believers. Each church has something to tell from the story of bible on its architecture or paintings inside.This historic tour will take a traveler to these ancient and bygone cities and towns that has much stored in their soil to tell to any visitor taking them thousand years back. Stele field, rock-churches, island monasteries, castle compounds, wonderful sceneries and people’s way of life are some of the major activities to be covered in this tour. A morning visit to any church service would give a chance for travelers to witness a Judaic influenced practice of the Ethiopian Orthodox churches.
DAY 1 : Arrival, Addis Ababa
Arrival Addis Ababa. If arrival is day time proceed sightseeing to the national museum, ethnographic museum, St George church, Holly Trinity church, and the biggest open-air market of Mercato. Back to Hotel. Dinner. Overnight Stay at Jupiter Hotel Or Helzer Inn.
DAY 2 : Drive from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar
After breakfast proceed driving to Bahir Dar. En route visit to the Debre-Libanos 13th century monastery which also acted as an influential center in teaching religious fathers and also the internal politics of Ethiopia. Then admire the Blue-nil gorge that is comparable to the Grand Canyon in the USA. O/n Home land Hotel or Abay Minch Lodge, Avanti Blue Nile resort (B & D)
DAY 3 : Bahir Dar
After breakfast head exploring the sightseeing in and around the city of Bahir Dar, presently acting as the capital for the Amhara people. Bahir Dar is set by the side of Lake Tana at an altitude of 1,830m. above seas level. Up on arrival head for boat trip on lake Tana, the biggest Lake in Ethiopia to visit the island monastery of Ura Kidanemhiret, which is the most colorful from the nearest available churches and monasteries. DAY 4 : Drive from Bahir Dar to Gondar
After early breakfast head to Gondar. En route take a de-tour to the village of Awramba, known for adapting a unique culture of work that is based on capacity but not sex & communal way of life. Take time in the village and continue driving to Gondar. Up on arrival have lunch break and then continue to explore the 16th-17th century Castle compound and the bathing pool of King Fasilades constructed by King Fasilades and his successors. Also visit to the basket market of Gondar. O/n Land Mark or Goha Hotel ( B& D).
DAY 5 : Drive from Gondar to Semien National Park

DAY 6 : Trek through the Semien National Park
Trek from Sankaber to BuaitRas, a very much breath taking scenery and back to Sankaber. Along the route is a chance to spot the other endemic mammal of Red fox. O/n Simien Lodge (B & D).
DAY 7 : Drive from Semien Mountains to Axum
Drive from Semien Mountains to Axum, the ancient city where the kingdom of the country started BC. Along the road admire the Limalimo twist and the most scenic and breath taking chains of mountains which are part of the Semien mountains national park. O/n panoramic view or Mountain View Hotel (B)
DAY 8 : Axum
After breakfast proceed to visit the Stele filed, the Tomb of Kaleb and his son G/ Meskel, The stone inscription of King Ezana (4th Century king). Have lunch and continue the sightseeing to Axum’s St. Mary of Zion Church, where the original ark of covenant given to Moses is believed to be kept, the ruined palace of Queen Sheba and Ezana’s stele park. DAY 9 : Drive from Axum to Mekelle
After an early morning breakfast head to Mekelle. En route visit the Adwa Mountains where the Ethiopian peasant defeated the colonial Italian power in the year 1886, the temple of Yeha which was a worship center for the moon god of the southern Arabian, the monastery of Debre-Damo (open only for men) which is the first monastery established in the 6th century and the Negash mosque where the first follower of prophet Mohammed had refugee when persecuted by their own people in Mecca. DAY 10 : Drive from Mekelle to Lalibela
Morning visit to the Museum of Mekelle which was once the palace of Emperor Yuhannes IV and then drive to Lalibela. Visit to the open air markets along the road and also admire the scenery of mountains which are situated in and around Gashena territory. O/n Lalibela Lodge (B).
DAY 11 : Lalibela
After breakfast proceed to visit the first group of rock-hewn churches, which are 6 in number represent the earthly Jerusalem. Then after lunch continues to visit the remaining second group of churches which are 5 in number again and represent heavenly Jerusalem. And later conclude the visit by covering the third group of church, which is the cross-shaped and highlight of the Lalibela churches, St. George. O/n Lalibela Lodge (B)
DAY 12 : Drive from Lalibela to Kombolcha
Early in the morning have breakfast and drive to Kombolcha. Aong the road admire the brajttaking mountains at Dilb and also the Wollo people. Visit also the HaykEstifanos monastery (open only for men). Then proceed driving to Bati from Kombolcha to see the colourful Monday market where the different tribal people of Afar, Oromo and Wollo meet together. Visit also the camel market. Sunny Side Hotel Dinner. Overnight.
DAY 13 : Drive from Kombolcha to Addis Ababa
Drive back to Addis Ababa. En route admire the scenery, visit the Italian made tunnel during the 1930’s occupation and also the mouth of the Rift Valley system. After dinner transfer out.
